John Robinson's Top Diesel Dragster Ready For Texas Diesel Nationals
23 March 2016 Texas - Visiting with Top Diesel driver and team owner John Robinson is always entertaining and very informative. The Texas Native had a lot to say about the sale of his legendary Diesel Funny Car/Altered combination during the offseason, and his decision to build a brand new dragster for the Top Diesel category in 2016.
"We'll let's see." Robinson began. "The big story is the current altered chassis was able to run in the 7.10's in Top Diesel, and now the class is running in the 6.60's. It was good old competition that mandated the change."
John finished 3rd in Top Diesel championship points last season... behind two dragsters.
John shared they have gone with a Switzer chassis, setup very much like Dan Jones's Scheid Diesel Top Diesel Dragster. It was even built on the same jig. Information is being shared between the two teams, with the hope to get the Top Diesel category into the five second zone sometime during the 2016 season. "Our central goal is to get into the fives." he said, "There's a five in these race cars, I'm sure Dan will likely get it first. We left Spitzer alone, they had a pretty clear path on what to do with the chassis, and it's certified as a 5.99 or quicker Top Fuel type car. There was a lot of emphasis on that, with thicker tubing and other changes."
John made a few shakedown runs at a recent NHRA divisional race in Houston in the new dragster, and on just its 3rd run ran 216 mph at the finish line, so the team is looking forward to their 2016 debut at the NHRDA Texas Diesel Nationals in Ennis on April 15th & 16th.
Long time supporters and sponsors Power Service Diesel Products, Texas Diesel Power and Scheid Diesel are continuing their support of the team. Robinson will be very busy this season, he is planning on attending 18 events. "We're on the road, and I think it's quite likely we'll be the very first diesel to run at an IHRA event shortly." he added.
Look for John and his new Top Diesel Dragster at the 2016 NHRDA Season opener April 15th and 16th at the legendary Texas Motorplex. The track is located in Ennis, Texas. Check at www.nhrda.com for more information.
