Wes Wimmer Wins the Big Rig Bracket National Championship
19 October 2016 Ennis, TX- The Big Rig Bracket class is still a new up and coming class on the NHRDA Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Drag Racing Series. With 2017 being only the second year as a National Points class there was a record number of competitors chasing the National Championship.
Wes Wimmer, of Perris, California, never imagined at the beginning of the season that he would be competing for the Big Rig Bracket National Championship. Wes has been in involved in motorsports for over 20 years as a truck driver and team member. When he isn't at a track, he is running his own trucking company.
Wimmer came to Arizona and the Desert Diesel Nationals presented by Strictly Diesel with his good friend Wayne Talkington, Talkington was competing in the Hot Rod Semi class and Wimmer decided he wanted to enter the Big Rig Bracket class and see if he could go home with a trophy. Wimmer got beat in the first round and with Talkington retiring from racing after the race; Wes figured his season was over at that point.
But when word got out that the NHRDA were looking for a truck driver Wes gave Randy Cole a call and said that since Talkington isn't racing anymore that he would love to drive the NHRDA Truck & Trailer to the races so he could still stay involved in motorsports. With flights and trips already booked Wes would have to wait until after the Diesels on the Mountain to actually get to drive the NHRDA Truck and his first trip would be to Gateway Motorsports Park for the Midwest Truckin' Nationals. Wimmer would be competing in the Big Rig Bracket class in the NHRDA Volvo.
Wimmer would be competing in a truck that he has never raced before so his first event wouldn't be an easy one. The truck performed flawlessly. He was #1 Qualifier and went on to win his first ever NHRDA Hot Shot's Diesel Drag Racing Series event trophy. Wimmer also claimed the lead in the National Points standings.
The next event that Wes would compete at would be the JB's Power Centre Canadian Diesel Shootout in Edmonton, Alberta. Once again Wimmer showed he knows how to wheel a big rig. He was the #1 Qualifier with a .180 reaction time and went on to a runner-up finish. He didn't get the trophy but he did go home with more points and a nice little gap starting to take shape at the top of the standings.
At the following race, the Big Sky Truck Fest presented by G & J Diesel, Wimmer would once again have to navigate a very tough field of Big Rig Bracket racers. Wimmer only made it to the semi-finals before losing but he did get #1 Qualifier points and was able to extend his points lead going into the final event of the season.
Coming into the NHRDA World Finals, Wimmer decided he wanted to bring his truck from California as he felt more comfortable racing it. All Wimmer had to do was pass tech to clinch the 2017 NHRDA Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Drag Racing Series Big Rig Bracket National Championship. Wimmer wanted the NHRDA World Championship as well. Wes qualified #4 and defeated Mike Clifton in the first round which gave him a single in the semi-finals. Wes faced off with Rick Fenwick in the final round and unfortunately for Wimmer he was late off the starting line and Fenwick used that to take home the NHRDA World Championship and the ring.
Wes was very quick to give thanks to the people that have helped him this season, "Thanks to Lucas Oil & Wayne Talkington. Thank you to the NHRDA, who are a real close family and a bunch of good people that I get to come out and have fun with and make a lot of memories with."
In his first full season competing in the NHRDA Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Drag Racing Series, Wes couldn't have imagined finishing as the 2017 NHRDA Big Rig Bracket National Champion. He is looking forward to defending his title next season.
