The NHRDA returned to Arizona for their 2024 Season opener the Desert Diesel Nationals at Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler Arizona.  Friday morning the track had to open the gates up 3 hours early as both competitors and spectators were already lined up out to the county road.  Friday night had the Big Rig Light Competition plus qualifying rounds of drag racing.  Saturday gates opened up at 7am and once again the lines were full to get into the event.  The Pickett Custom Truck Show had record number of trucks attending and final count was over 250 in the show n shine competition.  Huge thanks to all our sponsors, vendors and Firebird Motorsports crew for making the season opener such a success.  Congratulations to all our 2024 DDN Champions.

PRO MOD CLASS CHAMPION – Wade Minter

Pro Mod Champion -  Wade Minter

Wade Minter is crowned NHRDA Pro Mod Champion at the 2024 Desert Diesel Nationals.

Wade Minter from Maypearl, Texas, and his beautiful 1963 split-window Corvette powered by a Cummins engine were the #1 qualifiers, running 5.02 ET. They struggled during qualifying to find the correct setup as the heat and track conditions changed every hour but as we headed to the finals they were confident they had it figured out.

In the final round, it was Brandon Wood with his 1995 Ford Mustang in the left lane and in the right lane Minter's 63 Corvette. So it is a Ford versus Chevy but both competitor's power plants are Cummings power.

Wade had the better reaction time .125 and never looked back running 5.18et at 132.62mph to Wood's 5.37et at 120.01.

Congratulations to Wade Minter and Team TSD!

Super Street Champion - Rick Fletes

Rick Fletes captures his first win in the NHRDA Super Street Class at the Desert Diesel Nationals. Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona

Fletes not only races his beautiful wheel-standing 1970 Chevelle at the race track, he actually drives it to the racetrack. Last weekend, he made the 800-mile journey from his hometown of Galt, California, to Chandler, Arizona.

After the qualifying rounds ended, Fletes was sitting in the #4 position. As we went into the eliminations, Rick was watching the ever-changing track conditions so he could adjust tuning to match track conditions.

The final round would put Rick Fletes in his 1970 Chevelle against Myer Stump and his 1996 Dodge Ram, but unfortunately, Stump could not make the call because of mechanical issues. Fletes got the buy and laid down a 6.06et on the 5.90 dial time to capture his 1st victory of the 2024 season.

Congratulations to Rick Fletes!
