Initially, the gauge will indicate full for the first 7-10 gallons, thereafter operating normally. However, the distance to empty calculation remains based on the stock fuel capacity. For instance, at 20 MPG and a full 55-gallon tank, you'll have an 1100-mile range, though the distance to empty will display 620 miles (20 MPG * 31 gallons).
